NEST 2026 Scoring & Admission FAQs
How is the NEST 2026 total score calculated?
The NEST 2026 exam contains four sections: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics (each of 60 marks). A candidate must attempt at least three sections. The total score is computed as the sum of the best three section scores among those in which the candidate has cleared the Subject Minimum Admissible Score (SMAS).
What is SMAS in NEST?
SMAS stands for Subject Minimum Admissible Score. It is the minimum score required in a specific section to be considered for ranking. If a candidate does not qualify the SMAS in at least three sections, they will not be included in the merit list, regardless of their total marks.
What are the expected SMAS cutoffs for 2026?
SMAS is calculated dynamically based on the performance of all candidates. For General category candidates, it is typically 20% of the average of the top 100 scores in that section. For OBC, it is 90% of the General SMAS, and for SC/ST/PwD, it is 50% of the General SMAS.
